Château de Villaines
Description
A walled kitchen garden of classical design (axial, geometric and symmetrical), restored since 1998, forming part of a vast, regular landscape. (Listed site).
Set within a listed site, the gardens of Villaines are arranged around the buildings, comprising pleasure gardens to the north (bounded by dry moats) and to the south (bordered by water-filled moats).
The so-called ‘utility’ gardens consist, to the east, of an orchard which marks the boundary with the Villaines woods, and, to the west, of a walled kitchen garden covering approximately one hectare.
Situated in the very heart of a 200-hectare area of woodland and meadows, Villaines is fortunate not to suffer from any environmental nuisance or pollution at present. The River Préau flows below the moats.
