CHÂTEAU DE MARTIGNÉ

Historic site and monument, Castle, Registered and listed sites in Avessé
  • This castle is exceptional for its location overlooking the Vègre Valley and for its architecture, as it is the result of the fusion of 15th, 16th and 17th century buildings.

  • There is no more charming description of Château de Martigné than that given by Didier Auvray and Alain Betin in "Châteaux et manoirs de la Sarthe, Editions" (Cénomane, Le Mans, 1988).
"There are houses that blend in so well with the landscape that they seem to have always been part of it (...) Set in this peaceful setting is the castle, whose layout seems so complex at first glance.

"There are houses that blend in so well with the landscape that they seem to have always been part of it (...) Set in this peaceful setting is the castle, whose layout seems so complex at first glance.
Two parallel buildings rise up from their high gables: the first, built in the 15th century, was doubled by a second a century later. Traces of their age can be seen here and there, archways and loopholes, dilapidated stonework and carved railings. The russet angle chains stand out in their dark hue against the light-coloured rendering of the walls. To achieve symmetry, the twin main buildings were flanked by square pavilions at either end. The château is set in parkland several hundred years old, and lives in its former self-sufficiency, with a vegetable garden and orchards.
