Louplande comes from the Latin LUPILANDA, meaning "Wolf moor". This name comes from the fact that moorland covered a large part of the commune where wolves lived.
If you take a walk around the ponds, you will be surprised to discover a magnificent landscape, resembling a small valley surrounded by woods.
Passing through the "Vieux bourg" (old village), you can see a group of old Sarthe houses built of Roussard stone. When you reach the junction with the RD309, the Château de Villaines path is on your left. Don't hesitate to take this route, as you will not only be able to admire the building, but also to visit the garden, which is listed as a "Remarkable Garden". The château was built in the mid-17th century on the ruins of a medieval castle dating from the 12th century, and has not been altered or added to since.
Finally, in the middle of the woods and plains, you can admire the Château de Maquillé.
